Once slavery officially ended within the British empire (in 1838),
a new system of coercing people to work on its plantations was required.
Here, Indians are seen arriving in Mauritius, one of the first countries
to receive indentured labour from India.
The parallels between this form of transported labour and slavery
were not lost on a number of commentators, including the Illustrated
London News (from which this image is taken) and The Times.
