This document is an extract from an article in the Gentleman's Magazine
entitled 'A History of Sugar Cane'. After discussing how sugar is
made, it goes on to enlighten the reader about the characteristics
of 'Negroes', their various (supposed) dispositions, and their dietary
needs. Stereotypical ideas about people from different regions of
Africa appear to have already emerged. Gentleman's Magazine,
