Caribbean Studies and Black and Asian History
The Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICS) and The National Archives are working together to build on the success of the Caribbean Studies and Black and Asian History (CASBAH) pilot project.
The pilot CASBAH website www.casbah.ac.uk/
contains research resources relating to Caribbean Studies and the history of Black and Asian people in the UK. You can use this website to search or browse the CASBAH database and to view the full text survey reports. It is based upon research in the main collections relevant to these areas of research and also looks as sources in some general collections.
The database contains:
- Information from a UK-wide sample of relevant archive, printed and audio-visual resources held in academic, public and special libraries and repositories
- Demonstrator sample of about 400 records relating to resources for Caribbean Studies and the history of Black and Asian people in the UK
The project reports provide detailed information on CASBAH´s pilot and regional surveys and present guidelines devised by CASBAH on conducting surveys and subject indexing in these subject areas.
ICS and The National Archives are committed to promoting the best practice methodology in conducting archive surveys and in subject indexing developed by CASBAH. ICS and The National Archives would like to thank the original project team, the CASBAH Steering Group and the partners in the project who helped to develop these.
The National Archives plan to include the website within the framework for a national archival network, subject to external funding. In the meantime, University of London Computer Centre (ULCC) will continue to host the website, and have agreed to do so up to early 2007. The CASBAH site will be maintained as a demonstrator of good practice for archives addressing social exclusion and skill sharing.
