Cabinet papers

Cabinet Papers 1915 - 1978 was a two-year project led by The National Archives and part-funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). Its overall aim is to provide an online resource and access to the full text of Cabinet papers from 1915 to 1978 and continuing.

These collections of minutes and memoranda, which cover both peace and wartime, are a fascinating record of the way in which the British government grappled with events of the 20th century. They are a key source for researchers across a broad range of subject areas and disciplines including politics, economics, social science and international relations, as well as an integral part of study for students and teachers at all levels.

Users will be able to access and browse the archive regardless of location or time, with comprehensive search facilities opening up research opportunities that paper and microform-based search aids cannot deliver.

The aim in digitising these records is to provide wider access to the collections. Access to both the collections and study packages, which link to the digitised material, will be provided free of charge to schools for ten years and to higher education institutions for five years.

The project was completed in December 2008.  Please visit the JISC website for more information about the JISC digitisation programme.
