Introduction

Gordon Lansdown Barnes (c1917-1985) was an ecclesiologist, a local historian and an architectural photographer with a national reputation. Much of his photographic work can be found in the National Monuments Record. His published works include Stepney Churches (1967), and Frederick Preedy, Architect and Glass-Painter 1820-1898 (1984). He also worked with Canon Basil Clarke on 'Demolished and Desecrated Churches of London'. He was Secretary to the Worcester Diocesan Advisory Committee from 1979. His collections of books and MSS were bequeathed to the Council for the Care of Churches and his photographs to the National Monuments Record.

When examined the Barnes papers were stored in 22 box files and a further five card boxes. The boxes themselves are not numbered but the reference numbers are those which have been given to the papers. The collection includes numerous papers relating to the Victorian church architects Henry Woodyer (1816-1896) and Frederick Preedy (1820-1898), Victorian stained glass artists and a number of Victorian architects. It also includes an extensive collection of papers, newspaper cuttings, photographs and plans relating to churches in the London area. The collection also includes eighteen notebooks.

The Council for the Care of Churches was founded as the central co-ordinating body for the Diocesan Advisory Committees for the Care of Churches in 1921. It is now a permanent commission of the Church of England's governing body, the General Synod, and has a wide variety of functions, both statutory and advisory. The Library of the Council for the Care of Churches is housed in the Council's offices in Fielden House, 13 Little College Street, London SW1P 3SH.

This list was compiled following a visit to the Library by Dr Andrew Lewis and Dr Hazel Bagworth-Mann in connection with a survey of the papers of British antiquaries, archaeologists and historians being undertaken by the Commission. The Commission is most grateful to the Council for the Care of Churches, and to Miss Janet Seeley (Librarian) for her assistance.
