Introduction

Henry John Ellison, the son of a London solicitor, was successively perpetual curate of All Saints, Brighton (1840-43), vicar of Edensor (1845-55), vicar of New Windsor and reader at Windsor Castle (1855-75), and rector of Great Haseley (1875-94). He held a prebend in Lichfield Cathedral (1854-73), honorary canonries at Christ Church, Oxford (1873-94) and Canterbury (1894-99), and a chaplaincy-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria (1879-99). He was one of the founders in 1862 of the Church of England and Ireland Temperance Reformation Society (of which he was chairman until 1891) and in 1876 of the Police Court Mission. In 1854 he married Mary Dorothy (d 1870), daughter of Sir Joshua Jebb, surveyor-general of HM Prisons.

John Henry Joshua Ellison, eldest child of this marriage, was educated at Eton and Merton College, Oxford. Appointed in 1881 as assistant domestic chaplain to Archbishop Tait (whose youngest daughter Agnes was to be briefly his first wife), he afterwards became vicar of St Gabriel's, Pimlico (1885-94), chaplain to his friend Randall Davidson (1891-1928), vicar of Windsor (1894-1913), chaplain-in-ordinary to five successive sovereigns (1896-1944), rector of St Michael's, Cornhill (1913-44), proctor in Convocation for the diocese of London (1920-29), chaplain to the Stock Exchange (1929-44), president of Sion College (1930-44) and prebendary of Finsbury in St Paul's Cathedral (1931-44).

The papers listed below were presented in 1994 by Mrs Jane Ellison, widow of Gerald Ellison (Bishop of London from 1973 to 1981), youngest son of Prebendary Ellison by his second wife Dorothy Crum. A few items from Bishop Ellison's papers (which are at Lambeth Palace Library) are included in this collection.

The Commission is most grateful to Dr Eileen Scarff, Archivist and Librarian to the Dean and Canons of St George's Chapel, for her assistance in the cataloguing of the Ellison papers and the compilation of this report.
