Searching by personal name

The personal name simple search allows you to search the Personal Index and the Diaries & Papers Index for references to the papers of individuals listed in the indexes of the National Register of Archives.

This can be searched in to ways, by name of an individual or by description.

To search for the papers of an individual enter one or more elements of his/her name in the Name field, such as 'Arthur Wellesley', and select the Search button.

To search by description, such as 'field marshal', or by peerage title, such as 'Wellington', enter the term in the Description field and select the Search button.

NOTE: do not enter text in both fields or search on initials.

A more focused search can be made using the Advanced Search of the Personal Index.
