On the 75th anniversary of British aviator Amy Johnson´s historic solo flight from Britain to Australia, newly unveiled documents detail her frantic preparation and sometimes controversial journey down under.

The Air Ministry and British Consular documents show the pioneering pilot and media darling in a different light, as she is described as "foolhardy" and "purely selfish".

They also reveal the bravado of the 26 year-old at a time when she carried no radio equipment, but packed a pistol.
