David Mitchell - Who Do You Think You Are?
05 August 2009
David Mitchell's most famous character is probably the neurotic Mark Corrigan from Peep Show. Like most of David's characters, Corrigan is idiosyncratically English. David is a history buff, having read history at university, and he relishes the thought of exploring his family tree.
Imagine David's surprise when his quest for his ancestors takes him, not to England, but to Scotland. His journey takes him back to the time of the Highland Clearances, when many Highlanders suffered through tragedy and emigration as they lost their tenancies on small farms.
Look for your ancestors
If, like David, you would like to explore your Scottish heritage take a look at ScotlandsPeople, which includes Scottish census records from 1841 to 1901. The General Register Office for Scotland and The National Archives of Scotland websites will also be useful.
