The National Archives gains Academic Analogue status

07 April 2006

Last year the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) invited applications from national museums, galleries, archives and libraries for academic analogue status. This enables such institutions to bid for research grants and research leave, in their own right. The National Archives was one of eight institutions granted this status from their applications. The analogue will commence in April 2006, and run for five years initially.

We are delighted to have achieved this, and look forward to the possibilities of working with higher education colleagues, as well as those in other record offices, or with other analogue institutions. In The National Archives we will now be thinking about how we are going to take this forward, and possible areas and subjects on which we would like to focus. These will range from medieval to contemporary records in all media, embracing born-digital records, as well considering issues of records management, archival science and document conservation techniques. In all this we will be utilising the potential of current digital technology to the full.

The National Archives already has a long and successful history of partnership with academic institutions in externally funded projects, but the success of this application embeds more firmly than ever our commitment to the interests of our community of academic users.

Very much connected with the above is our recent invitation which has gone out to the Head of every UK university History Department, to send us the name of a representative, to whom we can channel all items of interest from The National Archives to academic historians. Please help us to inform you by signing up!
