Austrian-Brazilian Frischauer arrived in the UK in 1934 for a visit as representative of Austrian and Yugoslavian newspapers, and stayed. He was employed by the Joint Broadcasting Committee but came under suspicion through reports by several people with whom he came into contact. He was interned in July 1940 on the advice of the Security Service but released the following month after representations from the Foreign Office. In November 1940 he left for Brazil, intending to write a biography of President Vargas. In 1951 references to Frischauer were found in papers left behind by Guy Burgess when he defected.
