Daughter of Wilhelm Koenen, the leading German Communist, Johanna Koenen first came to notice in 1933 when visiting the UK, a visit extended after Harold Laski made himself responsible for her. Her brother Heinrich was involved in the Soviet Rote Kapelle spy ring. On interrogation in the USA Johanna admitted to being a Soviet Intelligence agent.
