Eighth tranche of colonial administration records released
29 November 2013
The eighth and final tranche of colonial administration records is now available to view in the reading rooms at The National Archives.
This release contains records on Malta, Singapore, Tanganyika, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indian Federation, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uganda, West Indies Development and Welfare Organisation (WIDWO), Western Pacific Zanzibar, Kenya land transfer programme and 'Files relating to the migrated archives'.
The 'Files relating to the migrated archives' are records created by the Colonial Office Intelligence and Security Department and the records management branch of the FCO. These records provide background information on the colonial administration files and how they have been managed over time, including some destruction of records.
We have been working with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to transfer and release colonial administration records, referred to as the 'migrated archives' between April 2012 and November 2013. This is in accordance with FCO's published timeline. To find out more about the series of migrated archives releases there is a podcast by Professor Badger, Independent reviewer appointed by the Foreign Secretary, on the colonial administration files page of GOV.UK.
Searching the records
A podcast and guide to the newly-released eighth tranche of migrated archives provides more information on how to search the records.
The collection is part of record series FCO 141: Foreign and Commonwealth Office and predecessors: Records of former colonial administrations: migrated archives.
The records cover a wide range of subject matter relating to colonial administration. The material reflects events in the territories generally pre-independence and the views of Her Majesty's Government's at that time.
