Explore Your Archive campaign launched at Houses of Parliament

22 November 2013

The Explore Your Archive campaign was officially launched at the Houses of Parliament yesterday.

The campaign is aiming to encourage people to visit archives; hundreds of local, specialist and national archives across the UK and Ireland have been holding events, open days and exhibitions this week to showcase highlights from their collections.

Clem Brohier, Acting Chief Executive of The National Archives, was joined by MPs, Lords, archivists, guests and campaign ambassadors at the parliamentary launch, hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Archives and History.

He said: 'Explore Your Archive affirms and celebrates the value of archives. But it will also make people think differently about archives; about what they contain and how they can be used. As a campaign, Explore Your Archive is a huge step forward and we're immensely proud to be part of it.'

Caroline Williams, President of the Archives and Records Association, which developed the campaign alongside The National Archives, said: 'Public awareness of the role of archives is essential. Especially in the difficult times we find ourselves in. There are too many people who do not understand what an archive is or what an archivist does. We hope this campaign will bring many new people to an archive - in person or online.'
