Olympic records added to Discovery
26 July 2013
A year on from London's moment in the sporting spotlight, the first records belonging to the 'Archives of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games' are now searchable through Discovery.
Around a third of the records in LOC 6 are open and will be orderable in the reading rooms at Kew. They include publications produced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) such as day-by-day guides to the Olympic Torch Relay, spectator guides to Olympic sports and examples of identity and accreditation cards used to access Olympic venues.
Additional material is being catalogued and the descriptions will be added to Discovery over the next 12 months. A large proportion of the collection is digital and comprises approximately five terabytes (5TB) of data; comparable to around 50 kilometres of paper records.
Many of the records, including those in LOC 7, which cover the bid phase from 1993 to July 2005, are closed in accordance with the agreement reached with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The National Archives has also archived websites connected to the Games and these can be viewed in our web archive's Olympic themed collection.
