An example of a pipe roll (catalogue reference: E 372/35)

26 January

Last night BBC2 aired episode two of ‘The Crusades’. This is a three part series looking at the medieval conflicts from the first crusade and the following period. This second episode featured scenes from within The National Archives.

Dr Thomas Asbridge looked through a pipe roll document and translated some of its contents for the viewers, including what supplies Richard the Lionheart was procuring for his army.

The pipe rolls Dr Asbridge researched were E 372/35, E 372/36 and E372/37. These are Records of the Exchequer and its related bodies, more specifically, records of the Pipe Office. This is an open series and available for viewing for all members of the public with a reader's ticket.
