Survey of the harbour of St John one of the Virgin Islands undertaken in November 1784 signed by Nelson
Admiral Sir Richard Hughes, commander in chief of the West Indies station, ordered Nelson, HMS Boreas, to survey the harbour of St John as a potential base to shelter Royal Navy ships during the hurricane seasons. This was a testing task for Nelson as the island was a Danish possession. The survey, which was signed by Nelson, was drawn by HMS Boreas’s master.
