The National Archives, on behalf of the Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance in the Cabinet Office, is responsible for delivery of the Information Assurance training programme to public sector employees. Organisations covered by the Data Handling Review must demonstrate they have met the training requirements described in 'Data Handling Procedures in Government: Final Report June 2008'. Completion of this training programme will help to achieve this. To reserve a place on the training, please complete the online booking form.

The programme

The programme consists of two parts. Firstly, completion of Level 3 Protecting Information e-learning, available via the Civil Service Learning portal.

This learning is aimed at new Senior Information Risk Owners (SIROs), Information Asset Owners (IAOs) and Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) and builds on the messages in Levels 1 and 2. It also provides a contextual overview and basic grounding in Information Assurance, roles and responsibilities, information risk management and the first steps in managing an information loss incident.

The second element of the programme is attendance at the free half-day group training. This training is offered to new SIROs, IAOs and NEDs, and it is recommended where possible, all attendees complete the Protecting Information Level 3 prior to attendance. The half-day session, some as scenario workshops, covers the following:

  • the nature of the SIRO/IAO role, responsibility and accountability
  • leading and fostering a mature information handling culture
  • sources of information risk
  • managing an information loss incident
  • the cyber threat
  • staff security and the insider threat

Access to Protecting Information e-Learning from 1 April 2012

With the closure of The National School of Government, the Protecting Information learning package can be found on the Civil Service Learning (CSL) portal where three levels of e-learning is available:
  • Level 1: provides all staff with a comprehensive guide to why information is so important, the risks to its safety, and what can be done to protect it. This is mandatory training for those with access to, or are involved with managing, personal information
  • Level 2: is designed for those who have a specific responsibility for handling information, and is particularly aimed at IAOs, line managers, and is also relevant for others such as those in policy, project and procurement roles
  • Level 3: (part one of the Information Assurance training programme): is aimed at new SIROs, IAOs, and NEDs. This module builds on the messages in Levels 1 and 2 and provides a contextual overview and basic grounding in Information Assurance, roles and responsibilities, information risk management and the first steps in managing an information loss incident

Please note - The National Archives is not responsible for access to CSL, which is limited to UK civil servants only.
