This one-day course is for staff responsible for cataloguing records selected for permanent preservation in The National Archives. The objectives are to help cataloguing staff in government departments understand the overall accessioning process, to broaden their knowledge of The National Archives' online Catalogue, and to enable them to catalogue records according to The National Archives' defined standards.

This course is only open to staff working in government departments who catalogue records selected for permanent preservation in The National Archives.

What the course covers

  • An explanation of the overall 'accessioning' process, which is the process of cataloguing and preparing records, transferring them to The National Archives, and subsequently making them available to members of the public
  • An explanation of the structure of the online Catalogue, and advice and guidance on how to use it
  • An explanation of The National Archives' cataloguing principles and standards
  • Several intensive, hands-on cataloguing exercises
  • Hints and tips on using MS Excel to compile catalogue spreadsheets quickly and accurately
