The time for wrapping up warmly and preparing for Christmas is now upon us.

Colourful images from our vaults show that past traditions remain. Have you made your Christmas pudding yet? Our Empire Marketing Board recipe, originally printed as a poster might give you some tips. Goods from past Empire countries were promoted in Great Britain to embed global economic unity using posters and other campaigns.

For some, Christmas is about food, crackers and children. Our images below show these themes with photographs, cracker adverts and greetings cards, including one in Gaelic.

Love it or hate it, winter often features snow and lots of it. Photographs of a snow plough and the untouched beauty of a snowy landscape depict two extremes of snowfall. Our romantic image of three pretty Edwardian girls amidst snowflakes is one of our most loved winter images.
