Request:

'Discovery' - how much did it cost, who commissioned it and why was it introduced?

Outcome:

Successful

Response:

The Discovery project was commissioned by The National Archives' Executive Team. Information about the reasons for its introduction can be found in our Discovery FAQs web page.

The cost of the new Discovery system, to date, was £530,450 in 2010/11, £475,108 in 2011/12 and £67,322 in 2012/13. This amount is inclusive of all expenditure related to, or used in any way as part of the Discovery project over the past three years. Following initial research which demonstrated that extensive investment and resource would be required to sustain legacy systems, the organisation chose instead to invest in Discovery, which will support The National Archives more effectively in the coming years, whilst allowing us to make full use of technological advances to further enhance our online services.
