Criminal Register for 1840, counties A - H, showing persons indicted and tried in Hereford at the County Sessions on 30 December 1839.

These sessions, held at the end of 1839 are in the county register for 1840. Degree of Instruction, relates to basic education, and their ability to read and write. ´N´ not able to read and write, ´Imp´ imperfect, might have some ability, and ´Well´ also appears, meaning they can read and write and had some basic education.

The register records where they were tried and whether at Assizes or Quarter Sessions and the offence with which they were charged, or in some cases if they were discharged without trail.

Sentences are recorded, with a column for any acquittals; sometimes there was no prosecution or no bill of indictment.
