In 1903 the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve was formed. Volunteers joined agreeing to serve either on shore or at sea as required. In 1914 some went to sea but most, together with reservists from the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Fleet Reserve, were formed into a Royal Naval Division to fight with the army on the Western Front. Records of men who served in the RND will be in ADM 339. The RNVR was amalgamated with the RNR in 1958.
