Queen Alexandra´s Royal Naval Nursing Service

A female nursing service was first introduced at Haslar and Plymouth hospitals in the 1880s and extended to all naval hospitals in 1901. In 1902 Queen Alexandra´s Royal Naval Nursing Service was formed. Names of matrons and head sisters appear in the Navy List from 1884. Records of nursing sisters from 1884 to 1909 can be found in ADM 104/43. An establishment book in ADM 104/96 gives details of nursing sisters and ward masters from c.1912 to 1927.

A service register for QARNNS covering 1894 to 1929 is in ADM 104/161 and includes a surname index. Registers for reservists between 1914 and 1919 are in ADM 104/162-165. A campaign medal roll for nursing sisters is in ADM 171/133.
