North America and the West Indies

There are a number of sources for emigration and settlement in the British colonies in North America. There are a number of published reference works, including J C Hotton, Original Lists of Persons emigrating to America, 1600-1700 (London, 1874). Also, P W Coldham, Bonded Passengers to America, 1615-1775 (Baltimore, 1983), The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776 (4 vols, Baltimore, 1987-1993) and others. The early series of records in CO 1 are described and indexed in the Calendar of State Papers, Colonial, America and the West Indies, which are available on CD-ROM in many reference libraries. Other papers are available in CO 5, America and West Indies Original Correspondence covering from 1606 to 1822. Within this series each colony is separately listed.

Records for Canada and West Indian islands are held in different series of Colonial Office records, which can be searched for on the online catalogue.
