Hungarian refugees

Following the Hungarian uprising In October 1956 a great flood of refugees poured across the Austrian border. By the end of the year some 153,000 persons had sought safety, with many thousands, after  receiving ready assistance in Austria, finding haven in countries in Western Europe and overseas. A number of case files of Hungarian refugees appear in HO 405, though these relate mainly to those who had been here as refugees before 1948.

HO 352: Aliens, General Matters (ALG Symbol Series) Files relates to general establishment matters, policy and casework of the Aliens Department on a variety of issues relating to aliens and immigration. HO 352/141-9 are files relating to the admission, residence and employment of Hungarian refugees from the Hungarian revolution. Over 21,000 refugees entered the UK between 1957 and 1958, though 6,000 went on to Canada and 1,800 chose to return to Hungary. Files concerning the maintenance of Hungarian refugees can be found in AST 7/1621-3. LAB 8/2344 and LAB 8/2371 detail Ministry of Labour administrative and employment arrangements for Hungarian refugees.
