Service records are still held by the Ministry of Defence. You can find details of how to obtain these records on the MOD's website at http://www.veterans-uk.info/.
Operational records for the British army are held in a number of WO series, and war diaries for the Second World War are held in several series arranged by theatre of war. There are also war diaries of colonial forces and some dominion forces.
