Money in Chancery
Solicitors
wishing to deposit money where the heirs, beneficiaries or next of kin cannot be traced have used the Court of Chancery and the Chancery Division of the High Court since 1876. Commonly known as ´money in Chancery´ the correct term is dormant funds and the list of such funds have been published as supplements to the London Gazette since 1887. Claims to dormant funds rarely succeed unless full documentary evidence can be supplied to support a claim, and the cost involved in producing this evidence tends to far outweigh the sums of money concerned. A search of dormant funds can be requested by contacting the Court Funds Office. Information is available on the Court Service website http://www.courtservice.gov.uk
