Officers

The Air Force List from 1918 records all commissioned officers serving in the RAF. Retired lists first appear in 1949 and give date of birth, qualifications, honours and awards, date of first commission, date of retirement and date of commission of highest rank attained.

The National Archives holds service records of officers whose service ended before the end of 1919 in the series AIR 76. They are arranged alphabetically and are available on microfilm. The Ministry of Defence holds later service records. http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/raf.html.

There are many files in the Air Historical Branch series AIR 1 which relate to serving officers and to RAF units. They include files on officers´ flying times, appointments and postings, nominal rolls, lists of POWs and dispositions. Some files relate to officers who stayed in the RAF after 1919 and for whom there is no record in AIR 76.
