First World War campaign medals for RFC personnel will be found in WO 329
, and the medal card index in WO 372 can be searched on Documents online. Medal entitlement for RAF personnel is included on their service record. RNAS rolls will be found in ADM 171.
Gallantry and meritorious service awards to RFC personal will be found with army awards in WO 389, 390, 391 and other series. Recommendations for honours and awards can be found in AIR 1. RNAS awards will be found among naval awards in AIR 1, 116, 137 and others. The ´Honour Sheets´ in ADM 171 should be consulted.
The Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Force Cross, Distinguished Flying Medal and the Air Force Medal were instituted in June 1918. Recommendations for awards can be found in AIR 1, and also in AIR 2 under Series A, Code 32/1 and Series B, Code 30. Peacetime awards can be found in AIR 2. Submissions to the Sovereign in ADM 30 should also be consulted. Second World War awards should be looked for in AIR 2, Series B, Code 30. Some awards will be in the War Office series WO 373.
To find the correct file references to awards in AIR 2, you may need to obtain the old Air Ministry file reference from the Honours section at RAF Cranwell who have a nominal index. Only recipients or their next of kin will be provided with details.
