England and Wales before 1837:

Non-conformist registers

Non-Parochial birth, marriages and deaths registers online

You can access images of a number of non-parochial birth, marriage and death registers 1567-1965 online at BMD Registers. Basic searching is free of charge, but there is a fee for advanced searching and to download images.

What indexes exist?

Many non-conformist births or baptisms are indexed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' International Genealogical Index (IGI). You can search the IGI online using FamilySearch.

The British Isles Vital Record Index, also published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, contains references to some 80 per cent of the birth entries in Dr Williams' Registry of Protestant Dissenters and the Wesleyan Metropolitan Registry of Births. This is available on CD-ROM at The National Archives.

Non-conformist (including Catholic) local registers

We hold many (but not all) local registers on microfilm at The National Archives. To find out whether we hold registers for the area in which you are interested, search the Catalogue entering the area of interest, for example, Devonport, as a keyword, and RG in the department code box.

We also have some printed volumes of Catholic registers published by the Catholic Record Society in the library.
