England and Wales before 1837:

Non-conformist registers

What indexes exist?

Many non-conformist births or baptisms are indexed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' International Genealogical Index (IGI). The National Archives has the 1992 version of this available on microfiche.

You can also search the IGI online using FamilySearchExternal website - link opens in a new window.

The British Isles Vital Record Index, also published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, contains references to some 80% of the birth entries in Dr Williams' Registry of Protestant Dissenters and the Wesleyan Metropolitan Registry of Births. This is available on CD-ROM at The National Archives.

Non-conformist (including Catholic) local registers

We hold many (but not all) of these on microfilm at The National Archives. To find out whether we hold registers for the area in which you are interested, search the Catalogue entering the area of interest, for example, Devonport, as a keyword, and RG in the department code box.

We also have some printed volumes of Catholic registers published by the Catholic Record Society in the library.

Online

A new partnership project between The National Archives and S&N Genealogy Supplies means that you can now access images of these records online. BMD Registers provides access to the non-parochial and nonconformist registers 1567-1840, held in RG 4, RG 5, RG6 and RG7. This includes the births, marriages and burials certificates and notes of the Society of Friends' (Quakers) plus the birth registry of Baptist, Presbyterian and Protestant Dissenters (known as 'Dr Williams Library'), as well as Registers of Clandestine Marriages and of Baptisms in the Fleet Prison, King's Bench Prison, the Mint and the May Fair Chapel. Basic searching is free of charge, but there is a fee for advanced searching and to download images.
