Technology watch

The technology watch project was about migrating records to new file formats and about ensuring we have technical information on the nature of the electronic records we hold on which to base this migration. In particular, we needed to know when the file formats will cease to be readable on current technology. When this happens, we will need to have a method to migrate the records to something that can be read on modern technology. For example, if we had taken in Amstrad PCW files, we would have needed to transfer them to Microsoft Word or a similar technology so they could still be read.

Project status July 2008

The project has successfully installed and tested all key components necessary to ensure active preservation of electronic records held in the Digital Object Store. Functions include; monitoring, planning and physical migration.

With the completion of all key deliverables, the End Project Report was approved and the project has been closed.
