1. They would have known that British soldiers killed in action are usually buried near the place that they fell.
2. They would have watched British officials at the funeral service and visiting his grave to lay flowers.
3. They would have seen Major Martin’s death and a sympathy notice listed in The Times newspaper a few weeks later. They looked out for this sort of thing.
