Joseph Bruce Ismay, 1st class passenger. Managing Director of the White Star Line and Titanic survivor (COPY 1/565/564)

To mark the 100 year commemoration of the sinking of the Titanic, pupils can take part in our new virtual classroom session about the voyage of this fateful ship.

Using original documents from our collection that chart the experiences of real passengers, pupils can find out what it would have been like travelling first class and how this experience compared to that of third class. They will study the emergency telegrams that were sent from the ship as she was sinking, as well as press cuttings and government reports about the disaster.

Using all of the information that they have gathered during the session, pupils will then write letters as though they are passengers onboard Titanic, describing their experiences before disaster strikes.

A pack of preparation materials and guidance for follow-up work will be made available to pupils in advance of the session.
