Catherine Parr, played by a costumed interpreter
Catherine Parr, played by a costumed interpreter

The National Archives and Hampton Court Palace have joined together to offer a special series of workshops to commemorate the 500-year anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne.

Pupils will begin their day at The National Archives, where they will assume their roles as advisers to Kateryn (Catherine) Parr, King Henry VIII's latest prospect for marriage. Using original documents taken from the reign of Henry VIII, pupils will investigate the personality and actions of the King, in order to gather evidence to present to Catherine. This is a man who has made his way through five wives. Should she allow herself to become the sixth?

Pupils will then travel to Hampton Court to counsel the Queen in person. Catherine Parr will meet them and take them on a tour of Hampton Court Palace, working out what Henry's magnificent house can tell us about his character. Pupils will then visit a quieter part of the Palace, away from the prying eyes and ears of Henry' s courtiers. Here they will present their evidence to Catherine, and advise her on how to act - and how best to keep her head! Which is more dangerous: to agree, or to refuse? What would you have done in Catherine's place?
