Roger Bigod was the Earl Marshal of England, whose duty it was to write up a list of all the knights performing feudal service (serving in the king’s army).
Although he was an experienced soldier, Roger Bigod does not appear to have been very good with money. In 1291 he was heavily in debt to Italian bankers and was forced to sell some of his manors to the king of England. Two years later he owed great sums of money again, this time to the king, and was forced to agree to a repay the debt in monthly instalments. No wonder he didn’t want to pay any tax to the king!
Roger Bigod was married twice, but did not have any children by either marriage.
