In 1225, Gilbert became the most powerful landowner in England - he inherited both the estates of his grandmother (Maud de St Hilary), as well as the title and estates of the Earl of Gloucester. Altogether he controlled 456 manors!
He also ended up marrying the daughter of the Earl of Pembroke, William Marshal - who held Gilbert captive after the battle of Lincoln in 1217.
