Photo of the return to Britain of Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, April 1919
(Catalogue ref: ZPER 34/154, reproduced by permission of the Illustrated London News Picture Library)
  • This photo shows Haig returning to Britain at the end of the Versailles Peace Conference.
  • It shows Haig as a family man – a soldier returning home. It is very different from the impression given of Haig by later writers.
  • There is a lot of evidence showing that at the end of the war Haig was a hero in Britain. He was generally regarded as the man who had led British forces to victory.
  • There is no doubt that he and other commanders made mistakes in 1916 and 1917. However, it is also fair to say that he learnt from them and achieved victories in 1918.
