THE PUBLICATION OF PAPERS ON THE
DARDANELLES OPERATIONS.

(Note by the Chief of the Imperial General Staff).

I am strongly opposed to the publication at the present time of any papers dealing with the Dardanelles operations for the following reasons:-

1. Publication would call attention to a story which brings little credit to our methods of conducting war. It would, I am convinced, affect disadvantageously our prestige in the East, where moral factors have more than ordinary weight; and this at a time when we are beginning to reassert our influence.
