Messages celebrating Ghana's independence day in 1957
(Catalogue ref: DO 35/6183)
Messages were sent to the government of Ghana to send good wishes to the country as it became an independent state.
The first extract is from the UK High Commissioner, who represented the British government in Ghana.
The second extract is from the American Ambassador to Ghana.
Ghana became independent after a long campaign by nationalists in Ghana. The first calls for independence came in the 1920s but the real campaign came in the 1940s and 1950s, a campaign that eventually succeeded.
