Letter by a British official in 1759 on the Seven Years War in India
(Catalogue ref: SP 54/45/72)
This is a note written by the Earl of Holderness to Lord Beauclerk
on 18 October 1759. Holderness was the government minister who was responsible
for British policy in India. Beauclerk was a commander of the British
forces fighting the French in the Seven Years War.
The note is replying to a report sent by Beauclerk to Holderness earlier in the month.
The Seven Years War lasted from 1756-63. British and French forces
and their allies fought in Europe, North America and India. It was in
this war that leaders like General Clive made their reputations and
their fortunes (see source 6 in this case study).
