These extracts come from a document prepared by the Joint Intelligence Committee
for the British Cabinet in October 1962.
The Joint Intelligence Committee was made up of the top people in the Intelligence
services. As well as monitoring the reports from British agents, they worked
closely with US Intelligence.
Interpreting photographs was not easy, as you may have seen from the introduction
from this case study. In this document, the British experts are essentially
saying whether or not they agree with the US experts' interpretations of the
photos taken by the U2 spy planes.
Surface to surface missiles means missiles launched at targets like cities
or military bases on the ground. Bases for anti-aircraft missiles did look
similar to these.
Nm stands for nautical miles, which are a little longer than ordinary miles
(about 1.85 km)
IRBMs are Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles; MRBMs are Medium Range
Ballistic Missiles.
This is one short extract from the report. There were other detailed sections
which dealt with MRBMs and surface-to-ship missiles.
