By-election	One-off election of an MP, usually because an MP had to retire, or sometimes when MPs died
Candour	Accuracy or honesty
Chivalry / chivalrous	Polite and respectful behaviour, usually towards women
Coerced	Forced, or pushed around
Combatant	Member of the armed forces involved in actual fighting
Constituency	Area represented by an MP
Constitutional	Allowed by law
Deplore	Disapprove or dislike
Deputation	Group who represent a larger group
Discharge	Letting go
Enfranchise	Give the vote
Expedient	Right action at a particular time
Grading	The rank held by someone in the armed forces
Handbills	Small leaflets
Harboured	Looked after someone
Ignominious	Not very impressive
Impolicy	Unwise political action
Indifferent	Not interested
Initiating	Starting
Inopportune	Wrong action at the wrong time
Juncture	Moment in time
Malice	Dislike or hatred
Malignant	Evil
Martyr	Person who dies for a cause
Meted out	Handed out
Metropolitan	City area, sometimes referring specifically to London
Non-combatant	Person not involved in actual fighting
Pious	Religious
Profound	Deep and moving
Recognisances	Promises
Refrain	Stop
Signatories	People who have signed something (e.g. a letter or petition)
Suffragist	Campaigners for women's suffrage - usually this term referred to the moderate NUWSS and their allies
Suffragette	Campaigners for women's suffrage - usually this term referred to the militant WSPU
