Help - Payment
The National Archives does not receive funding from Parliament to make documents downloadable: our funding covers our duty to make it possible to search and locate information, and this we do via the free search facility.
The cost of creating downloadable images of documents is considerable, and Treasury rules are that an "added-value" service such as this must have its full cost recovered from the customer. Without the income that we receive from this activity we simply could not afford to make documents available to download.
Some records, such as newly released documents may be made available free for a limited period (typically one month).
It costs £3.50 to download a will and most other individual documents. Due to cost savings in this particular area, we can now offer medal cards for a fee of £2.00.
You can pay by credit card, debit card or Click&Buy.
We use the Royal Bank of Scotland's secure system to make sure that your payment is safe. This system uses industry standard, 128-bit SSL encryption to protect any sensitive information you send. The Royal Bank of Scotland guarantee the security of the card details entered for payment using their system. The National Archives neither has access to, nor stores, any of your card details.
Click&Buy allows you to pay by direct debit, cash or via your BT phone bill. Once you have an account, you simply confirm payment by entering your username and password. This means that you do not have to enter your payment details repeatedly.
