JG Hughes was a retailer. They registered a very similar version of this design under the pattern name 'The National' (See design 214372) in November 1867. The manufacturer of the design is not known. The design is composed of Rose, Thistle and Shamrock. These flowers are often referred to as 'Royal Flowers' or 'Union Flowers' and represent England, Scotland and Ireland.
