Scope and content
Crimea, Renkioi hospital, Dardanelles. Temporary wooden hospital erected under Dr. Edmund Parkes, super-intendent. Letter from I.K. Brunel, engineering consultant. Copy of document recording purchase of site from Turkish government in the name of Mrs Calvert, wife of the British Consul, and transferred to H.M.G. Closure of the hospital (1856). Lists of "2nd class officers, Ladies, Nurses and orderlies" embarked for England on steam-ships Alice Jackson and Lady Eglinton. Sale of buildings and equipment under direction of J. Brunton, resident engineer. Mrs Calvert repurchases the land and seeks annulment of transfer to British government. War Office protests but withdraws objection. Renewal of War Office doubts on transaction (1858).
