Churchill crushes mediation proposal
Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax and former PM Neville Chamberlain, now Lord President of the Council, appeared to favour using the services of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini as mediator to bring about a negotiated peace with Hitler.
By 28 May this option was clearly not viable, but Halifax still entertained hopes that US President Roosevelt could try mediation. This suggestion was crushed by Churchill.
