Public Record OfficeMapping projectsThe Public Record office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission managed and cooperated with other professional bodies on a series of surveys to gather quantitative and qualitative data about archival facilities and services in the United Kingdom. These are collectively known as the archival mapping projects. The archival mapping project methodology has been applied to a number of projects in recent years. The methodology enables the collection of reliable, comparable data about facilities and services in archive repositories. Through these surveys a detailed picture of archival provision across the United Kingdom has been compiled, and is of great use in planning archival strategy and funding policies at all levels.
