Historical Manuscripts CommissionThe Historical Manuscripts Commission (HMC) has a long tradition of publishing information on the location and nature of records highlighting their value for historical research. Its main publications include the Reports and Calendars series, as well as, more recently, a series of guides to certain 19th century Prime Ministers' Papers (Wellington, Palmerston and Gladstone); Guides to Sources for British History, and a series of volumes published jointly with a number of local record publishing bodies. HMC also published Reports to the Crown which were periodic surveys by the Commissioners of their own activities and of national issues raised in the course of their advisory and investigative work. There is a full list of HMC publications that are still in print in our section on academic research. Below are two publications that are still relevant for those working or involved with the archival sector. Archives at the MillenniumArchives at the Millennium is the twenty-eighth report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission 1991-1999. The report presents the results of an extensive consultation exercise to assess the archival health of the nation. It reviews progress in the care of Britain's archives over the past decade, and in making them available for study. It also identified some of the key issues to be addressed, by government and others, at the beginning of the new millennium if all archives are to play their rightful part in our cultural and educational life. The report takes a critical look at the structures within which archive services are provided throughout the United Kingdom, including the inter-relationship between archives, libraries and museums. It also and examines the importance of collaborative working with regional and national strategic bodies and funding organisations. The report provided a foundation on which future policy is being built, at all levels and will continue to have an impact on the shape and vigour of archives in the future.
Survey of archive cataloguing problems (England and Wales) 2002In 2002 the Historical Manuscripts Commission (HMC), with the help of six participating Regional Archive Councils and Archives Council Wales, undertook a survey of cataloguing problems in record repositories across much of England and Wales (excluding London and the South East and the North West region). The survey was intended to give an overview of both the quantity and the heritage quality of the uncatalogued research resources to encourage the allocation of funds and staff to address the problem locally, regionally and nationally. The survey was also used by HMC to inform future developments of the National Register of Archives.
