Accessions to repositories

In our annual 'Accessions to Repositories' survey we collects information from over two hundred record repositories throughout the British Isles about manuscript accessions received in the previous twelve months.

The Accessions exercise is a vitally important part of the work of the National Advisory Services.  The information received through the survey ensures that the material available on the National Register of Archives, and the other National Advisory Services information resources, are kept comprehensive and up-to-date.  The information also provides a vital knowledge base for the work of the National Advisory Services and is eagerly awaited by many archive users.

The material received from the Accessions survey is edited, mounted on the accessions section of The National Archives´ website and added to the indexes of the National Register of Archives. In addition, the data is used to compile a number of thematic digests which, as well as appearing on the Accessions web pages, are distributed to specialist repositories and published in a number of learned journals and newsletters.  The accessions received by each individual repository can be viewed on the ARCHON directory. When manorial records are included in an accessions return, the information is added to the Manorial Documents Register.
